A model of goal dynamics in technology-based organizations

2011

The purpose of the present work is to build a suitable system dynamics model for goal dynamics in organizations, as proposed by Barlas and Yasarcan (2008). The proposed model does not bear any ambition of being exhaustive: the main objective of this paper is to propose a model of goal dynamics in which Goal Setting, Management by Objectives and Training are viewed as human resource practices able to enhance workers' goal commitment, and therefore, improve organizational performance. In the first part of this paper, an analysis of the Goal Setting Theory and the role of goal setting practices, in bettering worker's performance, are stressed. In the second part, a case-study, the causal loop …

Talent Management

2012

Talent management is a new concept in the scientific literature, but not in the practitioner arena. In this sense, this chapter underlines the powerful perspective of talent management integrating practices from organizations and providing a scientific approach. Some previous results from different research are expressed in relation to strategy and organizational performance. Talent Management is clearly a concept close to high performance work system, with the difference of a more strategic approach. More than practices are goals for the organization to achieve excellence at work. So Talent Management is clearly linked with a strategic approach to the organization in order to attract, deve…

Individual Performance in Turbulent Environments: The Role of Organizational Learning Capability and Employee Flexibility

2015

Organizational learning capability (OLC) and employee flexibility help firms navigate the challenges faced by organizations operating in turbulent environments. OLC includes dimensions such as experimentation, risk taking, openness, dialogue, and participative decision making. Employee flexibility is considered a crucial tool for strategic human resource management in tackling environmental turbulence. Accordingly, we pose the following research question: how, and to what extent, is individual performance enhanced by OLC and employee flexibility in turbulent environments? The major impact that environmental turbulence has on change and flexibility requirements suggests that employee flexibi…

Building Long-Term Manufacturer-Retailer Relationships through Strategic Human Resource Management Policies: A System Dynamics Approach

2007

This paper is the result of a research project conducted by the authors with a manufacturer operating in the high-tech industry. It is based on the hypotheses that in order to successfully support retail stores, a manufacturer has to design policies based on Human Resources Management (HRM) practices aimed to increase retailers employees’ sales effectiveness, and external-oriented policies to foster potential customers’ acceptance of company product benefits. In order to support decision makers to explore alternative scenarios and to foster managerial learning on how to build strong and long term successfully manufacturer-retail outlets relationships, a System Dynamics model has been built.…

The Influence of Country-of-Origin on Human Resource Strategy of Multinational Companies in Developing Countries

2009

Human resources can be one of the company's sources of competitive advantage if it is managed effectively and efficiently. Taking this into considerations, MNCs are straggling in designing the human resource strategy that helps them to gain competitive advantage in host countries. In a globalized world however, multinational companies (MNCs) are in the complex pressure of finding appropriate balance between global, home country and local practices especially in the area of human resource management due to the fact that cultural contexts differ significantly among nations. According to theories of ethnocentricity, MNCs tend to transplant the dominant business strategic practices of the count…

Recruitments in Finnish universities: practicing strategic or pathetic HRM?

2016

Recruitment is a core instrument in the academic labour market. This article takes the perspective of the organisation − here, the university − on recruitment. Universities’ personnel policies and practises are shifting from legally oriented personnel administration to more strategic human resource management (HRM). In Nordic countries, this shift is partly driven by the changing status of higher education institutions from state-governed bureaus to more autonomous institutions. This article provides insight into this transition, using Finland as a case example of higher education systems that have undergone drastic reform, moving from a civil servant model to autonomous personnel policy. D…

Reflections on Human Resources – Vital Intangible Assets of Organizations

2014

Abstract Starting from the reality that human resources represent the most important strategic resource of the modern organization and that each human being is a unique entity, with own personality, needs and offer, the investment in human resources should become the most important investments of organizations, despite being the most risky investments. The only alternative to avoid this risk and to bring together employee and employer on the same level is career management. From a different perspective, human resources represent the intellectual capital of organizations, the only ones that can assimilate and, from the perspective of the new economy, make the most of knowledge. All these asp…
